Ciao!
I was finally able to play a game with the WWII planes scale 1/144 that I assembled and painted this winter.
The chosen ruleset was Blazing Skies a free ruleset you can download here.
For this first test we went for a classic duel: Messerschmitt Bf109E Vs Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I.
Sono finalmente riuscito a giocare con gli aerei WWII scala 1/144 che ho assemblato e dipinto quest'inverno.
Il regolamento scelto è stato Blazing Skies, un regolamento gratuito che potete scaricare qui.
Per questa prima prova abbiamo scelto un duello classico: Messerschmitt Bf109E contro Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I.
The report - La cronaca
Because we did not play a specific scenario we placed the planes at the opposite corners of the table and randomly determined speed and altitude of each kite. The Spitfires happened to be at similar altitude and speed while the Me109 ended up at several thousands of feet of distance on the vertical.
Dal momento che non giocavamo uno scenario specifico abbiamo piazzato gli aerei agli angoli opposti del tavolo e abbiamo determinato casualmente velocità e altitudine iniziali di ognuno. Gli Spitfire sono finiti a quote e velocità simili mentre i Me109 si sono ritrovati a qualche migliaio di piedi di distanza sulla verticale.

The Me109 at lower altitude impulsively pull the cloche to gain altitude. Engine is at full throttle but the steep climb significantly reduces the speed and he lags behind his wingman. The other Me109 moves forward maintaining speed and altitude full throttling as well getting ready for the upcoming fight.

Il pilota del Me109 più a bassa quota impulsivamente tira la cloche verso di se ritrovandosi appeso all'elica. Il motore è a tutto gas ma la violenta cabrata ha ridotto notevolmente la velocità lasciandolo indietro rispetto al suo compare. L'altro Me109 procede in avanti mantenendo direzione e altitudine, anche lui aumenta i giri del motore preparandosi allo scontro imminente.
I piloti della RAF invece si separano virando in direzioni opposte e accerchiando i piloti tedeschi.

The pilots maneuver covering each other and trying to avoid getting a tailing bandit. Even if in bad positioning both sides do not resist and seeing an enemy fighter in their sight open fire with no major effects.
I piloti manovrano coprendosi a vicenda e per evitare di trovarsi un nemico in coda. Anche se in posizione sfavorevole entrambe le parti non resistono alla tentazione e vedendo un nemico nel mirino sparano alcune raffiche senza però sortire grandi effetti.

The pilots in the bottom right corner proceed on a collision trajectory. The Me109 starts a shallow dive converting part of its altitude into speed. The other two kites maneuver to try to protect their wingmen and to find better fire opportunities.
I piloti in basso a destra si sfidano in una gara di nervi procedendo uno contro l'altro. Il Me109 comincia una leggera picchiata convertendo parte della sua altitudine in velocità. Gli altri due velivoli manovrano per cercare di proteggere i compagni e al contempo trovare linee di tiro più favorevoli.
The dogfight continues in sequence of turns and sideslips.
Il combattimento continua in un susseguirsi di virate e scivolate d'ala.
Sustained fire, even from a non optimal position, starts to pay off. The gun sight of one of the Me109 gets smashed and the engine of a Spitfire is damaged and loses power.
Overtaken the Spitfire it has in front the Me109 performs a half loop and find itself on the bandit's tail. It lost a lot of speed and is now some thousands feet above the enemy. The climbing attitude prevents it from pointing its guns against the Spitfire but its position is now very advantageous.
Il fuoco sostenuto, sebbene da posizione non ottimale, comincia a sortire qualche effetto. Il sistema di mira di un Me109 viene compromesso mentre il motore di uno Spitfire viene danneggiato e perde potenza.
Superato lo Spitfire che ha di fronte il Me109 effettua un loop trovandosi così alle spalle del nemico. Certo ha perso moltissima velocità e adesso è alcune migliaia di piedi sopra il nemico. Uscendo dalla manovra cabrando non riesce ancora a puntare le mitragliatrici contro lo Spitfire ma la posizione è di certo vantaggiosa.

The two Spitfires now maneuver aiming at bringing the pursuers in range of their guns. Trusting the better range and power of their guns they hope to inflict significant damage to their enemies despite firing snapshots. Luftwaffe pilot try to maintain their advantage positioning as best as they can continuing the chase of the British kites.
I due Spitfire adesso manovrano con l'intento di portare a tiro del compagno l'aereo che li insegue. Forti della superiorità della gittata e del volume di fuoco del loro armamento contano di infliggere danni significativi ai loro avversari anche attaccandoli da una posizione non ottimale. I piloti della Luftwaffe tentano in tutti i modi di mantenere la posizione di vantaggio che hanno acquisito continuando a inseguire la coda dei loro bersagli.

Panoramica della situazione a metà del combattimento
The British pilots dive attempting to gain speed and leave their pursuers behind. The Germans do not hesitate and follow the Spitfires in the dive.
The firefight gets serious. Now position and distance favor the Germans but damages are abundant on both sides. Both a Spitfire and a Me109 are hit in the tank, the loss of fuel significantly reduces their range. The other Spitfire is hit in the ailerons and his control class is reduced by 1.
I piloti inglesi si gettano in picchiata cercando di guadagnare velocità e distanziare gli inseguitori che dal canto loro non si fanno pregare e abbassano i musi dei loro apparecchi in picchiata.
Lo scontro a fuoco si intensifica, in questo frangente la posizione e la distanza favoriscono i tedeschi ma i danni abbondano da entrambe le parti. Uno Spitfire e un Me109 vengono colpiti al serbatoio e subiscono ingenti perdite di carburante che ne limiteranno l'autonomia, l'altro Spitfire è danneggiato alle superfici mobili ed vede ridotta la sua classe di manovra.

The pilots continue diving reaching the structural limit of their kites. The Spitfires shoot their last bursts. Despite several hits are on target the enemy planes are not destroyed. The German planes are damaged but still able to fight and hold the positioning advantage.
I piloti continuano a picchiare raggiungendo i limiti strutturali dei loro apparecchi. Gli Spitfire sparano le ultime raffiche prima di esaurire le munizioni. Nonostante diversi colpi vadano a segno nessuno dei Me109 viene distrutto. Sebbene danneggiati, gli aerei tedeschi hanno ancora un paio di raffiche a disposizione e conservano anche il vantaggio della posizione.

At this point in time His Majesty pilots only objective is to come back in one piece. They are short of altitude and speed, damaged and with no ammo left. A deadly short range burst destroys one of the Spitfires, the pilot manages to hit the silk just in time.
A questo punto i piloti di Sua Maestà devono solo pensare a salvare la pelle. Sono a corto di altitudine e velocità, danneggiati e senza munizioni. Una letale raffica a distanza ravvicinata manda in fiamme uno degli Spitfire, il pilota riesce a paracadutarsi appena in tempo.

Now the Germans outnumber the British 2:1, shall the remaining Spitfire be able to go back to base in time for the 5 o'clock tea? The pilot of the Me109 with the leaking fuel tank starts to get nervous while the fuel indicator drops quicker and quicker, he unconsciously tighten his parachute gear...
Ora il vantaggio dei tedeschi è 2:1, riuscirà lo Spitfire rimasto a tornare alla base in tempo per il tè delle cinque? Il pilota del Me109 col serbatoio danneggiato comincia a innervosirsi mentre l'indicatore del carburante continua a scendere a vista d'occhio, inconsciamente assicura l'imbragatura del paracadute...

The english pilot goes full throttle asking all out of his Merlin Rolls-Royce engine and engage in a very tight turn hoping to disappear from enemy gun sights.
Unfortunately the Messerschmitt that has just overtaken it is at the end of a long dive and has all the speed it needs to go for another half loop that brings it back on the Spitfire tail.
Il pilota inglese rompe il sigillo della surpotenza chiedendo il tutto per tutto al suo motore Merlin Rolls-Royce e si impegna in una secca virata per togliersi dai mirini nemici.
Purtroppo per lui il Messerschmitt che lo ha appena superato è al termine di una lunga picchiata e ha tutta la velocità necessaria per eseguire un altro mezzo loop che lo riporta in coda allo Spitfire.

The Spitfire is doomed, the Me109 chase it diving and shoot it down with their last ammunitions. In this case as well the defeated pilot is able to jump off in time.
While one pilot celebrates the victory the other nervously scan the ground looking for a spot suitable for an emergency landing since his fuel indicator has reached the minimum and the engine starts to sputter...
Ormai il destino dello Spitfire è segnato, i Me109 lo inseguono in picchiata e lo abbattono prima di rimanere anch'essi senza munizioni. Anche in questo caso il pilota riesce a gettarsi col paracadute.
Mentre uno festeggia l'altro pilota tedesco scruta nervosamente il terreno sottostante alla ricerca di un luogo dove poter effettuare un atterraggio d'emergenza dal momento che la spia del carburante si è accesa di un rosso intenso e il motore ha cominciato a sputacchiare...

Final Comment - Commento finale
I liked these rules a lot. The mechanics really give the feeling of driving limited machines, which can gain speed or altitude only loosing the other. A climb too steep as well as a turn too tight can leave the kite low on speed and an easy prey for the enemy. In the same way being at low altitude reduces the options available to flee from an undesired situation.
So these rules effectively translate, in a simplified but realistic way, the energy fighting physics and allow to apply its theory in game.
The feeling is of re-enacting dogfights as told by the protagonists.
On the other hand the general mood of the rules leans to make the whole context less dramatic with some silly/non-sense rules (for instance you get a bonus on the to-hit roll if you yell DAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKA!!!). In general the chivalry of air combat is emphasized.
A negative note is relevant to the fact that being an amateur product the game accessories: roster sheets, tokens and templates are a players' responsibility and the graphical quality is lower that commercial products standard.
It is worth to mention the huge list of available planes profiles. it covers all the WWII period and all the involved countries, really impressive!
Le regole mi sono piaciute molto. Le meccaniche danno davvero il feeling di pilotare mezzi limitati, i quali possono guadagnare velocità e altitudine solo a discapito l'una dell'altra. Una cabrata troppo decisa come una virata troppo stretta possono lasciare l'apparecchio a corto di velocità e alla mercè del nemico. Allo stesso modo trovarsi a bassa quota riduce le opzioni a disposizione per abbandonare un ingaggio sfavorevole.
Insomma traducono in modo efficace, semplificato ma realistico, la fisica dell'energy fighting e permettono di applicarne la teoria con soddisfazione.
La sensazione è davvero quella di riprodurre combattimenti aerei come raccontati dai protagonisti.
D'altra parte il tono generale delle regole tende piacevolmente a sdrammatizzare il contesto non proprio allegro con alcune regole un po' più surreali e divertenti (ad esempio si ottiene un bonus a colpire se tirando i dadi si urla DAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKA!!!) e in generale enfatizzando in modo ironico l'aspetto cavalleresco dei combattimenti aerei.
Una nota negativa è legata al fatto che essendo un prodotto amatoriale i supporti al gioco: schede, indicatori, segnalini e sagome per il movimento sono in buona parte a carico del giocatore e di qualità grafica inferiore rispetto a prodotti commerciali.
Degno di menzione il vastissimo elenco di profili aerei disponibili. Coprono tutto il periodo del secondo conflitto mondiale e tutti i paesi coinvolti, davvero ammirevole!
